Short answer: Tell your AI what you want to learn, why, and how much time you have. Ask for a 30-day plan with short daily lessons. Then use it as a patient tutor: ask "dumb" questions, get quizzed, and check key facts with a trusted source.
AI is the most patient teacher you'll ever have. It never sighs. It never says "we covered this." You can ask the same question at 2 a.m. five times. It'll just smile (metaphorically).
Step 1: Set your goal
I want to learn Excel well enough to track my side gig's income and expenses. I'm a total beginner. I have 20 minutes a day, on my lunch break. Make me a 30-day plan, one small lesson per day, with a tiny practice task each day.
Swap in your own skill: bookkeeping basics, Canva design, Spanish for travel, photography, sewing. Anything.
Step 2: Do one lesson a day
Each day, start with:
It's Day 4 of my Excel plan. Teach me today's lesson in plain English, then give me the practice task.
Stuck? Ask it to explain another way.
I don't get it. Explain it again like I'm cooking, not doing math.
Step 3: Get quizzed
Quiz me on what I learned this week. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. Tell me what I got right and wrong, kindly.
Quizzes are how stuff actually sticks. Reading alone is like watching a cooking show and expecting to be a chef.
Step 4: Keep your progress in one place
Make a Project called "Learning Excel" (in ChatGPT or Claude) so your plan and notes stay together. See What are Projects for? Or turn on memory so it remembers where you left off. See Why your AI needs a memory.
