How to use Meta AI on WhatsApp (a plain-English guide)

Short answer: Meta AI is a free helper built into WhatsApp. Open it from your Chats screen, or type @Meta AI in a group chat, then ask your question. Meta only sees the messages you send to Meta AI. Your normal chats stay end-to-end encrypted.¹³

You already have WhatsApp. So this might be the easiest AI you'll ever try. No new app. No new password.

What can it do?¹

• Answer questions and give suggestions.
• Help you brainstorm, like gift ideas, trip plans, or what to make with three eggs and a sad onion.
• Join a group chat when you call it in.
• Make AI pictures right in the chat.
• Explain a message you forward to it.

Where do I find it?¹

Meta is still testing where the button goes, so it moves around a bit. Many people see a pink and purple circle on the Chats tab. Tap it to start a chat with Meta AI.

Don't see it? That's normal. Meta AI is only in some countries, and it rolls out slowly. Some people get it before their neighbors do. Keep WhatsApp updated and check back.¹²

Chat with it one-on-one

1. Tap the Meta AI circle.
2. The first time, you'll be asked to accept the terms. Read them, then agree if you're happy.
3. Type a question, just like texting a friend.

Try this:

Use it in a group chat

1. Open the group.
2. Type @ in the message box, then pick Meta AI.
3. Type your question after it, and send.

Meta AI only answers when someone tags it. It doesn't read the whole group chat.¹⁴ Want to reply to its answer? Swipe right on its message (phone) and type your reply.

Great for settling the family debate about which restaurant to try. Finally.

Can I turn it off?

Meta AI is optional. You don't have to use it.¹ But WhatsApp's help pages don't show a switch that removes it completely. If you don't want it, just don't tap it or tag it.

Kids and teens

Meta AI is not for kids under 13 (or 14 in some places).⁵ WhatsApp also offers parent controls for teens. Parents can pick the normal 13+ Meta AI setting or a stricter "Limited Content" one.⁶
