Under 13? Do it together
OpenAI says that if ChatGPT is used to teach kids under 13, an adult must do the typing.1 That's a good rule for any AI.
Sit side by side. You type, they ask. It's like reading a book together, but the book talks back.
Set up the parent controls
ChatGPT (teens 13–17)3
- Invite your teen to link accounts from your ChatGPT settings.
- After they accept, go to Settings > Parental controls and pick your teen under Family members.
- Choose their settings, like quiet hours.
Good to know: linking does not let you read their chats. In rare, serious safety cases, OpenAI may send you a notice.3
Google Gemini (kids under 13)5
- Go to familylink.google.com or open the Family Link app.
- Pick your child.
- Tap Controls → Gemini → Gemini Apps.
- Turn it on or off.
You'll get an email the first time your child opens it.5 It's rolling out slowly and isn't offered in the UK, Switzerland, or the EEA.5
WhatsApp Meta AI (teens)
WhatsApp's parent controls let you choose between the regular 13+ Meta AI setting and a stricter "Limited Content" option.7
