First: did "agent mode" vanish on you? Your account isn't broken. OpenAI retired agent mode. It got replaced by ChatGPT Work.12
ChatGPT now has two modes:2
- Chat: quick questions and friendly back-and-forth.
- Work: an agent for bigger jobs. It makes finished documents, spreadsheets, slides, and reports.
Think of Chat as asking a friend a question. Work is handing that friend a to-do list.
Where to find Work2
- On the web or your phone: open ChatGPT and pick Work. On a phone, it's in the menu at the top. On the web and phone, Work is for some paid plans.
- In the desktop app: pick ChatGPT from the top-left menu. Then pick Work from the switch at the top.
- Don't see it yet? Work is rolling out slowly. The web version and the computer version may show up at different times.2
Make your first file3
- Open Work. Say what file you want and what it's for.
- Attach anything it should use, like notes, a PDF, or an old version.
- Say the format and where it goes. For example, "a Word document" or "a Google Doc in my Drive."
- Say what must stay the same, like the layout, formulas, or tone.
- Look it over. Ask for fixes before you share it.
Create a Word document: a one-page checklist for closing up a summer cabin. Use headings for Inside, Outside, and Utilities, with checkboxes. Use plain language.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides3
- Connect the matching Google app in ChatGPT.
- In Work, ask it to make the Doc, Sheet, or Slide.
- Pick your account or file when it asks. Then approve the action.
- Open it in Google and check it. Look at who can see it, too.
Excel and PowerPoint: the fine print3
- Work can make spreadsheet files. Want it to edit an Excel file you already have open? You need the desktop app plus the ChatGPT for Excel add-in. (That path uses Codex, the developer mode.)
- PowerPoint isn't part of the desktop Work setup at launch. For slides, use Google Slides through your Google connection. Or ask for a file and see what you get.
Where did my file go?3
- Files made in cloud Work may land in your Library.
- Files made on your computer in the desktop app stay in that folder. They won't show up on the web or your phone.
- Temporary Chat files aren't saved to Library. Download anything you want to keep.
